Jake Weatherald's Sheffield Shield season has taken a worrying turn. During South Australia's match against Victoria at Junction Oval, the opener collided with an advertising hoarding while fielding near the boundary. The rope was positioned far from the hoarding, leaving a long slide zone. Weatherald did not leave the field immediately; he continued fielding and batted late on day one, edging debutant Harry Hoekstra to the keeper for a duck. Symptoms of concussion appeared overnight, and he was withdrawn from the match under Cricket Australia's concussion-substitute protocol. Matthew Gilkes, a recent recruit from New South Wales, replaced him. The timing is painful for Weatherald. He was dropped from Australia's Test side in August after managing only one half-century in his first six Tests (12 innings).
